The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation

Widely recognised as a fighter, Sir Bobby Robson has refused to give in to cancer an astonishing five times. He is still fighting 15 years after his first diagnosis and is currently undergoing chemotherapy for tumours in his lungs.

You might think that at the age of 75, and having retired from football management, Sir Bobby would be taking a well earned rest and focusing all of his energies on his own health. But you would be wrong. He’s set himself a new and very challenging goal.

Sir Bobby’s big goal is to fight cancer – in his own battle with the disease and by creating a charitable foundation. The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation will focus on the early detection and treatment of cancer and the clinical trials of new drugs that will eventually beat it.

Bobby’s asking you to support him now by giving as much as you can to the foundation. All donors will receive a personalised certificate and letter of thanks from Sir Bobby.

You can visit his website by clicking here.

If any supporters or companys have signed memorabilia that they would like to donate to Football-Forever.com, 100% of the money raised will be donated to the Sir Bobby Robson foundation with a certificate as proof, We will promote any of the companys involved. Email us at mail@football-forever.com

Cristiano Ronaldo – Does Anybody Really Care Anymore?

Since what seems the dawn of time, Real Madrid have been heavily linked with Manchester United’s twinkle-toed winker, Cristiano Ronaldo. Unfourtanetly for those of us who aren’t A) Man United fans B) Real Madrid fans or C) Sky Sports News addicts the Portuguese international has done nothing to put an end to the speculation which has dragged on since before the Champions League final.Ronaldo – Madrid bound?

Ronaldo

First we had Madrid, as is tradition with the Spanish giants, publicly acknowledging their main targets in the press. This was met with fury from Alex Ferguson, whose club then hypocritically threatened to report Los Merengues to FIFA for their conduct. After more speculation, which was more due to the players refusal to rule out a move than to the actions of Real Madrid, United eventually made an official complaint about the Spaniards, which the world governing body have refused to take any action over.

Then ‘Big’ Phil Scolari, the Portugal coach got in on the act, reportedly advising his young star to joing Madrid. In a turn of events that can only be described as ‘coincidental’ Scolari was appointed as the new boss of Chelsea, rivals with Man Utd. for next seasons title. Much to the annoyance of all connected with the Red Devils

But the one person who deserves the most stick over this saga is the player at the heart of it all, Ronaldo. In all the interviews he has done, he has never once stated whether he was going to stay or go, or stated his intention to honour his contract. At first it was thought (well I thought it anyway) that the playmaker was using the rumours as leverage to win a new, higher paying contract, but now it looks like he actually has no loyalty to United, or indeed Sir Alex Ferguson, who argubaly made him into the player he is today, transforming him from poncey winger to one of the worlds best. He has thrown the United fans adoration of him, right back in their faces. He says “I don’t want to talk about my future because I’m focused on the match against Germany, I will talk about my future after the tournament.” Yet he has been quoted as saying “I really like playing in a white football kit”. Members of his family have stated that he will join Madrid, and rumours surfaced in the last few days the United agreed a deal with Madrid weeks ago, without telling Ferguson.

So what are his motives for a move to La Liga champions? It can hardly be for a ‘new challenge’, surely retaining the UEFA Champions League would be enough of a challenge for the player? Maybe it’s the lifestyle afforded to players in Spain? For years many of Liga’s top stars have led less-than-professional lifes off the pitch, with nightclubs, alcohol and women (unless of course, you’re the ‘other Ronaldo’) the order of the day. One extremely strong pull factor for Ronaldo is undoubtadly the money; Real are apparently willing to pay Ronaldo €300Man United,000 a week, after tax!

It has gotten to the stage where most people wish Cristiano Ronaldo would make up his mind, one way or the other but the rumours are bound to carry on for weeks. The only ’silver lining’ to the cloud that is the end of the European Championships is that this tedious mess will all get sorted out.

Man United fans: Should the club cash in? Are you annoyed by Ronaldo? Or should the club offer him whatever it takes to keep him at the club?

Your Football Transfer Guide 2008

The European Championships in Austria and Switzerland are, inevitabley, turning into what is essentially an over inflated auction for club managers with access to generous funds. But for many teams this is irrelevant, for Coca-Cola Championship Teams the Summer transfer window is not so much a couple of months of juicy rumours, but a constant struggle to hold onto your assets; Fans are in constant fear of waking up and discovering that their star man has been sold to West Ham for nothing more than a bag of crisps and a Lucozade, whilst being in panic injuced hysterics that their club has been linked with Julian Gray in the morning papers. Here, we present you a guide to the 10 players who will be attracting the most attention this Summer, and why their supporters are sweating like Mike McShane in a steamroom…

GK: Wayne Hennessey (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

The 21 Year old Welsh International, raised in Beaumaris, Anglesey, has had a short whilst event filled career. He began life in football as a trainee at Manchester City but was released in 2003, when he was picked up by Wolverhampton Wanderers. He drifted in and out of the club during various loan spells, most memorably in the 2006/07 season when he set a Football League record of nine successive clean sheets and wins with Stockport County. But, the youngester’s career really set off in the 07/08 season, in which the now settled Wolves’ number 1 had a fantastic campaign; he made all 46 League appearences for the Midlands club, found himself as the new Welsh number 1 and made it into the 2008 Championship PFA Team of the Season. With such a fantastic season behind him, he is sure to be one of the hottest goalkeepers in the market; a new deal until 2012 will no doubt bring up his price, and it is no secret that Wolves want him at the club come August 9th.

DF - Kaspars Gorkss (Blackpool)

Normaly when people think of Latvia they think of Marian Parhars (then subsequently a stretcher), but soon it is likely that Kaspars Gorkss is the name that will first spring to mind. The talented defender joined the seaside club in 2007, immediately being put into the first team and helping himself to 50 appearances and 6 goals. His stock is rising, unnoticed to many, but one club who has noticed is QPR; many’s tip for the Title, the London club are plagued with money, more than they can spend; and it seems manager Iain Dowie wants the Big Man. QPR confirmed that they had made a bid on the 12th of June, however Blackpool issued a brief statement on the 17th June stating that they had reported QPR to the FA and the Football League for what they claimed was an illegal approach for Gorkss. This, could drag out..

DF – Bradley Orr (Bristol City)

Orr joined City in 2004 on a free transfer from Premiership Club Newcastle United. 4 years later, since scoring on his debut against Yeovil Town, Orr has made 151 appearances for the West Country Club, scoring 9 goals. He was instrumental in the club’s 2008 League run which saw them remarkably reach the Play-Off Final in their first year in the 2nd tier of League Football. Bristol City will know their chances of finding such a great full-back on a free transfer again are remote, and will be hoping Premiership teams, and bigger Championship outfits feel he does not fit in their plans. It is a waiting game, and with the risk of the ever so present ’second season syndrome’ hanging it’s head over Gary Johnson’s side, they will be praying he doesn’t want to leave personaly.

DF – Danny Shittu (Watford)

Shittu is one of those players who you feel has been around forever, whether it’s his rememberable name, or his overpowering height, the big defender makes an inprint on your memory, and this season as he has with former club QPR, he has impressed with every passing game. A key asset to his game is goals, he has scored 8 times in just over 60 games for his current club, and for a defender this is great feat, especially in the lower leagues where the defenders at set pieces take no prisoners. He has always been seen as a prospect, and seems to be slowly moving up the ladder; Watford fans in some quarters have accepted that he will be leaving (due to the pessimistic nature of a modern day Watford fan), and clubs that have been linked with the 27 year old Nigerian International include West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City. A fee of around £3 Million has been touted, and as the summer soldiers on, expect activity on this front.

MF – Joe Ledley (Cardiff City)

Ledley joined his hometown club Cardiff City at the age of nine and made his way through the youth ranks at the club, one of many homegrown players at the Welsh capital outfit, Ledley is a permanent fixture at the heart of the Midfield where he creates goals, scores them, gets stuck in and generally runs the game. His maturity is beyond his years (21) and no Welsh International squad is complete without him; the Central Midfielder is regarded as one of the hottest lower league prospects, if not the lower league prospect. Now with Peter Risdale, the Cardiff Chairman, admitting that the best players have to be sold to keep wages payable (see Ramsey to Arsenal), it looks likely that Ledley will leave Cardiff City, most likely for the Premiership. It is a matter of when, not if.

MF – Brian Howard (Barnsley)

See, here is the thing with Brian Howard, he has been Mr. Barnsley in my eyes since I stumbled across him a couple of years ago, he seems to put in 100% and has obvious talent on the ball; but I can’t help but wonder how he would fair at a bigger club. How would he do out of his comfort zone as the big fish in a small pond? Has his fantastic FA Cup season been a one off? These questions need answers, and the 25 year old, scorer of the famous last minute winner at Anfield, needs to prove to me that he has what it takes. I’ll reserve judgement.

MF – Ben Watson (Crystal Palace)

22 Year old Watson is Crystal Palace, he has never been at another club and has made 153 appearances (13 goals) for his Hometown team. The former England Under 21 International is one of the hardest workers in the League, he makes goal after goal, and chips in himself. With other Palace talents like Victor Moses being linked with moves away, Neil Warnock will be desperate to keep him; but it seems that he is one of the most coveted players in the Championship. Once again QPR and their millions have made their intentions known, and several reported bids have been made; all rejected. But it could end up too much for owner Jordan to pass up, with finances not being as free as they could be at the London club. We could see some big tugs of war this summer; this could be one of them, Palace will be praying that if they have to sell, other clubs will come in, and a bidding war will begin.

MF – Peter Halmosi (Plymouth Argyle)

As with most Plymouth players, 28 Year old Halmosi came out of nowhere. Fans were skeptical when the midfielder arrived from a club which Yoda would struggle to pronounce, 58 games later Argyle fans are kissing his feet and asking him to cure the ill. The Hungarian Interntional is the heart of every attack, and has scored 12 goals in his short spell at the club. He is inevitably attracted all sorts of interest, with just about every top Championship club, along with some top flight outfits, being linked with his name. Due to the remarkably tight finances of the South West club, a fee of about £4 Million is the relatively small touted asking price; it seems a good offer may be too good to turn down.

FW – Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

The second Wolves player on our list is what can only be described as, the AK47 of Goalmachines. When it comes to goals, the ex-Man Utd trainee, knows exactly what to do. When at Plymouth Argyle, the Cambridge born striker managed just under a goal every 3 games; leading Wolves to make a risky £1.5 Million swoop for the player in January 2008. For such a large move, mid-season, into a club with high pressures, the 22 year old would have been forgiven for not having an immediate impact. He had no intention of this, starting like a house on fire, the ex-Royal Antwerp loanee, scored 12 goals in 20 games, including the goal of the season, in one of the games of the year at Charlton Athletic. Unfortunatley Wolves failed to make the Play-Offs, and the Premiership may have to wait to see his talents, for atleast a year. Wolves must be a good tip for the title, and with players like Ebanks-Blake, Kightly and Hennessey if they don’t, they could be wiped clean of their assets next year. But there is no doubt that Premiership clubs will be looking at the most proven goalscorer in the League.

FW – James Beattie (Sheffield United)

Could the last place in our 10 really go to anyone else? This man is the definition of a ‘Big Fish in a small pond’. The £4 Million star signed for United when they were Relegated in 2007 much to the country’s disbelief; Beattie is a proven top flight player, most noteably with Southampton, and scores goals for fun at this level. He was always going to be one of the stories of the summer, it is only a matter of time before we see his name in the Paper; whether it be to another top Championship club, or to a Premeirship side. One thing is for sure he is the Yorkshire team’s star, and it will take a big offer to dislodge him; Kevin Blackwell (manager) will be licking his lips.

Happy Bidding…

..Of course we cannot forget those who have been relegated from the Premiership, fans of Derby (not so much), Birmingham and Reading will all be scared stiff of the issues surrounding their star players. at St Andrews James McFadden has today been linked with a move to SPL giants Celtic, Player of the Year Sebastian Larsson has managed to slip under the radar in Austria and Switzerland, Fabrice Muamba has already departed to Bolton Wanderers and Olivier Kapo’s name will not leave the news. Reading are having the same problems, with Glen Little already joining Portsmouth, ‘love him or hate him’ Stephen Hunt will almost certainly be linked again with the Irish revolution at Sunderland, Goalscorer Dave Kitson, Captain Nicky Shorey and James Harper are names we associate with the top flight, and could be back their come August. Even Derby will be concerned about Wonderkid Giles Barnes. It will be a stressful couple of months.

But who will The Championship clubs be looking to buy? The bigger clubs such as QPR and Birmingham will be looking at the players mentioned and Lower League players such as Jermaine Beckford at Leeds United. The Big Premeirship clubs will see their reserves raided of talent on loan, such as Frazier Campbell at newly departed Hull City. And of course we can expect some no name success stories (we’re looking in your direction Plymouth).

Motherwell To Pay Moving Tribute

Motherwell will pay an emotional tribute to former captain Phil O’Donnell in a pre-season match against Villarreal on 2nd August.

O’Donnell collapsed and died during Motherwell’s game against Dundee United on 29th December last year with the tragic event touching football fans across the world who paid tribute to the skipper by placing flowers at Fir Park or by leaving messages of tribute on Motherwell forums.

The game against Villarreal will see a stand named after the Motherwell legend, chairman John Boyle said -  “We are very pleased that Villarreal, who are an outstanding European team and a great club, accepted our invitation to play at Fir Park in this pre-season match.

“It will be an emotional day for everyone associated with Motherwell as we will be renaming the main stand after Phil.

“We hope our fans will turn out in their thousands again to salute Phil and to see us play against superb opposition.”

Spain v Italy – Will It Be Another Night Of Upsets?

Russia last night shocked the footballing world after thrashing potential tournament winners Holland 3-1. All the semi-finals have so far saw the favourites Portugal, Croatia & Holland knocked out.

Italy failed to perform in their group games and just scrapped through after beating France in a group deciding game but will the world Champions manage to cause another upset tonight and dump out the ever so impressive Spain who buried teams in their other games, or will tonight be Spain’s first test?

A Day Out in Liverpool 26th May 1989

Friday 26th May 1989 started out much as any other, I woke up, grabbed a coffee, and read the newspaper. Looking at the back page, I noticed quite a lengthy article about the evenings game at Anfield. There was a slight panic as I checked for the millionth time that my ticket was still in my wallet. Arsenal had been due to play Liverpool earlier in the season, but events at Hillsborough saw the game postponed, and rearranged as the very last game of the season, and although not planned when the game was rearranged, it was now the title decider. That ticket in my wallet was priceless, and I assured myself that I was keeping it regardless of how much I would inevitably get offered for it outside the ground. On went my Arsenal shirt, I grabbed my Arsenal scarf, and a thin jacket and headed off to the train station.

I lost count of the amount of times I checked on the train to see if the ticket was still there. I had worked out my entrance point, and the approximate position I would take up on the terrace in the corner of the ground. My train pulled into Liverpool Lime Street at almost the same time as a London connection, and suddenly there were hundreds of Arsenal supporters everywhere. It was not long after midday, and kick-off was not until 8:05pm, so what better thing to do, other than to head in the direction of the ground and take some refreshments on board! Arsenal supporters seemed to swamp every pub within a couple of miles radius of the ground. Several hundred of us bought cans from an off licence and headed to Stanley Park, where we created one hell of an atmosphere. We were singing, dancing and being generally very merry until about 6:30 or so, when quite a number of us peeled off and headed to Anfield.

The general opinion among the supporters was a positive one. Even though Liverpool had to be beaten by at least two goals, and baring in mind that it was in excess of four years since they had last shipped more than one goal at home. Outside the gates to the ground, it was electric, with such a massive buzz from The Arsenal fraternity. I bought a programme, read it from cover to cover while waiting for what seemed like an eternity for the turnstiles to open. Suddenly, there was a rush, and a mad scramble to get through the recently opened turnstiles to get to our preferred positions. I chose a crush barrier fairly close to the back. I can only presume that The Kop had been opened quite a while before we were allowed in, because there was quite a lot of noise coming from the other side of the ground. Within minutes we were filling up the terraces, and the chanting began. The players were coming out one by one to start warming up, and each player had his own song back then, which was repeated and repeated until the next player came out. I remember the players heading back in to get ready for kick-off, and presumably a chat from George Graham. The terraces were still filling, and we were really packed in over in that corner. The songs indicated that we were a good mix of North Bank and Clock Enders, and the relevant chants kept going until the players emerged from the tunnel.

As Arsenal came out of the tunnel in their yellow shirts, each player had a large bouquet of flowers, which were given to Liverpool supporters in memory of those who had perished in Sheffield a month previously, which was loudly applauded by supporters of both teams. From this point, we turned up the volume, and the dancing began on the terraces. I am quite certain we outsung Liverpool for 89 of the 90 minutes. The first half was goalless, but still the air of optimism remained. There was a kind of certainty that we could score twice in the second half, and early into the second half, a free kick was glanced on by Alan Smith. Cue the celebrations. We went absolutely potty, crazy and any other phrase that could fit. It was 1-0 to The Arsenal, and there was plenty of time to grab the second goal. We were louder than ever, and the party was in full swing. Suddenly there was a silence as Kevin Richardson was down, the 90 minutes were all but up, and it was only 1-0. We needed a second, but there was nothing happening. The Kop turned their own volume up as our players looked more and more tired, in fact cramp was creeping in among some. Everyone was nervously looking at watches, the person next to you’s watch, the person in fronts watch and almost holding their breath. John Barnes went on one of those runs, and although I didn’t see what actually happened, there was a sudden surge down the terraces, and John Lukic had the ball in his hands. I remember looking at the referee, who was staring at his watch. What happened next can only be described as the longest build up in history, yet the clock ticked at what seemed like a minute for every actual second. I was aware of a break from Arsenal, the ball bobbling about, then everything went into slow motion. Liverpools defence seemed to have everything covered, then there it was, that net was bulging, and the ball was nestled at the foot of it. My feet did not touch the floor all the way down the terraces as we exploded into rapture. To this day, I have no idea whether the game kicked off again, no-one cared, this party had started, and we were Champions. Against all the odds, we had gone to Liverpool and beaten them, and claimed that precious trophy, last held by us in 1971. Eighteen years of wait were over, and the mood among our supporters reflected it. I am vaguely aware of the players coming over to the corner where we were banked up. Tony Adams lifting the trophy aloft was fairly blurred from where I was standing, but I would say that the loudest cheer of the night was when he lifted it.

My dream had come true, Arsenal were Champions, and so the planning to go to see the homecoming began.
