Season Preview – Aston Villa Fan [MrBham]

Are you pleased with your summer transfers?
I’m happy with the players Aston Villa have bought, but I’d like to see at least three more.

Who would you still realisitically like to sign?
De La Red has been linked with us. Whether this is realistic or not is a matter or perception, but I’d like to see it happen. Otherwise, I would like to see Santa Cruz in a Villa shirt.

What is your teams main strength?
Attack. Ashley Young is crucial in our attacking game and is the player that will always make an impact.

Who is the weak link in your team?
Couple of options. I Think Zat Knight isn’t the signing we hoped for. I would also normailly say Petrov, but he did pick up his game towards the end of last season.

Where do you think you will finish the season?
6th or 7th. I refuse to talk to those who expect Champions League. It’s possible (never say never and all that), but a Uefa Cup place is more realistic.

Is your manager the right man for the job?
It’s Martin O’Neill. He’s one of the greatest managers today. Someone who says no needs to be shot on site.

One to watch?
Ashley Young. From the academy, Delfonsou.

What would be the highlight of your season?

Watching ‘lowly’ Aston Villa beat teams that underestimate them.

Shorey Completes Villa Deal

As we previously reported Nicky Shorey has now completed his £5m move to Aston Villa after agreeing personal terms.

Villa fended off strong competition from Portsmouth in the bidding war and will now also complete the signing of Luke Young later tonight or tommorrow morning.

This could pave the way for Gareth Barry to complete his move to Liverpool after the left back has now signed to cover Bouma’s long term injury.

Duo Complete Villa Medicals

Nicky Shorey and Luke Young have both completed medicals at Aston Villa’s training ground and will tommorrow discuss personal terms ahead of their transfers.

The Duo are believed to cost Martin O’Neill around £9million but the Aston Villa manager was delighted with securing the two.

O’Neill told Aston Villa’s official website – “We have agreed a fee with Reading for Nicky Shorey – a quality natural left-back who played for England 18 months ago.

“As we speak he will be coming up for a medical and hopefully we can agree terms.

“The right-back position caused us a few problems last season in terms of us not having a natural right-back.

“Now we’ve also agreed a fee with Middlesbrough for Luke Young. So hopefully there won’t be any major problems and those two deals can go through.

“Luke is a natural right-back and played for England not so long ago. He did very well for Boro last season and this is a great opportunity for him.”

Barry Not On Transfer List

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has ruled out a possible bid for England and Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry.

Reports had suggest that Arsenal would be willing to pay Villa’s asking price and hijack his dream move to Liverpool, however Wenger said to the media – “I don’t know if Gareth Barry will leave Aston Villa or not, but I am not on his case.

“I like Gareth Barry and I like two or three other players. It is better I don’t speak about names, I said that yesterday. It is better I leave things to your imagination and creation.

“I cannot tell you anything more. If we sign a player we will come out and tell you, but I can say to you now that we are not close to signing anybody.”

United Star Wanted By Aston Villa

Aston Villa are hoping to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster on a 12 month loan deal to replace former goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Foster plays for England

Foster impressed whilst on loan to Watford and made an impressive debut for Manchester United before ligament damage ruled him out of the season.

Manchester United could be set to let the youngster out on loan to gain more experience whilst Edwin Van der Sar is between the sticks.

The goalkeeper was recently capped by England due to his consistant performances whilst on loan at Watford.

Villa Star Wants To Stay

John Carew has confirmed he wants to remain at Villa and possibly see out his footballing career at Villa Park.

Carew was the club’s top goalscorer last season, hitting the back of the net on 13 occassions and he believes goals will continue to flow now he is settled in England.

Carew is mobbed

He said to the media – “I have two years more on my contract so there is no rush with anything. But I am very happy to be here and I would like to stay for many years more.

“If that is the club’s wish, then that is my wish as well. We will see what happens. But I would like to stay here for a long time.

“I really like it here, am really happy here, so I am absolutely open for that. I would like to put roots down here for a quite a long time.

“It is a league that really suits me well and I am happy with the football and really enjoy playing it. That is important to me.”
